Hakim al-Asaadi, 25, sits at the bow of a canoe as it navigates it way in the Hammar marsh, about 50 miles north of Basra. The post Saddam Hussein marshes of the south of Iraq are once again becoming vibrant places as marsh Arabs return to their traditional homes. Several organizations are involved in supporting the livelihood of the marsh Arabs but the focus of those efforts range from attempting to recreate the marsh to transforming former marshland into an agricultural use. |
