Hamed Mohamed Hashim navigates his boat toward an abandoned dwelling in which he remembers visiting family on the al-Hammar marsh. Hashim grew up in the marsh and now lives just outside of Basra but still reaps the resources of the marsh for his livelihood. He and his family were ordered to leave their marsh home by Saddam Hussein’s army after the first Gulf war. The banks of the Shatt al-Arab river were broken open again by local marsh Arabs again after the overthrow of Saddam in 2003. |
