As the call top prayer is sang from a speaker system within, marsh Arabs make their way into a traditional Mudhif made of reeds at a village in the Hammar marsh about 50 miles north of Basra. The Mudhif is built solely from reeds and closely mirrors the dwellings made by the Sumerians who developed one of the earliest architectural styles in the world with columns, arches and vaulted roofs. The Mudhif is where traditional gathering place where guests are entertained, family disputes are settled and marriages are arranged. |
