With images of Imam al-Hussein and a black banner decorating the walls in honor of Ashoura, marsh Arabs participate in mid-day prayers in a Mudhif made of reeds at a village in the Hammar. The Mudhif is built solely from reeds and closely mirrors the dwellings made by the Sumerians who developed one of the earliest architectural styles in the world with columns, arches and vaulted roofs. The Mudhif is where traditional gathering place where guests are entertained, family disputes are settled and marriages are arranged. |
