A Red Cross team stops to check on children sent to collect fire wood and building material on donkeys along the dirt road from Abeche to Adre. The road is the main link from Abeche, where United Nations High commission of Refugees (UNHCR) and non-governmental organizations has a base for operations to the eastern border zones of Chad where thousands of Sudanese, and increasingly Chadian, people are finding themselves homeless after attacks from militias in Sudan. In Sudan’s western region of Darfur, the Jajuweed continue their campaign of terror in an effort to displace native villages from their lands. Doctors Without Borders is one of the few health organizations operating in the furthest border areas looking to help people regardless of the increased dangers. The UNHCR and World Food Organization are serving displaced people in refugee camps further away from the volatile border zone.
