The Shah-do-Shamshira Mosque, or “King of Two Swards” Mosque, stands on the banks of the Kabul River across from the opening of the massive Mandayi Market. The building was built to honor a warrior in a 7th Century battle between attacking Islamic troops and defending Hindus. The legend says a two-sward wielding warrior was beheaded in battle but continued to fight with out his head. The mosque was built in the 1920s by King Amanullah’s mother on the site of Kabul’s first mosque. The mosque is still regularly used. |
