A well known Sufi singer named, Parwani, center, leads a Sufi musical session in song. In a nondescript mud brick building, 20 or so Sufis gather to take turns playing and listening to each other play music to communicate with God in a poor neighborhood in Kabul. The Sufi sect of Islam is a mystical mix of prayers, chants and dancing that they believe brings them closer to God. Mohammad Ahsan is the present of a 90-year-old family tradition of leading Sufi musical groups. The Sufi seek to achieve communication with God through various acts of meditation, recitation of sacred phrases, controlled breathing, dancing, hymn singing, physical gyrations and music. The group uses a hand-powered organ, two types of stringed instruments called a Sitar and a Tar, several types of hand drums, and a Ney, a type of flute. The group plays together once a week and for weddings.
